When I was first introduced to the idea of getting clear on my purpose, I was resistant to the idea because it sounded very ethereal and vague; like it was some cosmic idea that was hard to grab onto. If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone – I was right there with you. But getting clear on your purpose is none of those things. Getting clear on your purpose is as easy as understanding 3 important truths:
- You have limited time on this earth.
- You are unique, with different experiences, attributes, and perspectives.
- You want to do something that is important.
If you agree with these 3 statements, then you can unlock your purpose and what I like to call your Big Why.
Having a purpose is not some spiritual woo-woo thing. It’s simply answering this question:
How do I want to spend my limited time in a way that is really important?
And when we can answer that question with clarity, 3 very powerful things happen for us:
- Our Big Why provides extraordinarily high levels of intrinsic motivation
- Our Big Why allows us to pursue and achieve the most audacious goals
- Our Big Why keeps us faithfully committed to most important tasks
To help you get clear on your Big Why, below are a list of questions that we need to be able to answer:
- If nothing changes in your life, what will you regret on your deathbed?
- What makes you come alive?
- What breaks your heart?
- What pisses you off?
- What do you do that makes you forget to eat?
- What contributions do you want to make in your life?
- If money were no concern, how would you spend your time?
- Where do you enjoy spending your time the most?
- What’s true about you today that would make your 7-year-old self cry?
- How are you going to save the world?
Remember, we’re trying to answer this critical question to optimize success:
How do I want to spend my limited time in a way that is really important?
When we study the most successful people in the world, all of them have a Big Why. In fact, most successful people will tell you that their success is a byproduct of their Big Why, and that success sometimes seems accidental for people relentlessly pursuing their Big Why. When we’re on the right seat on the bus, doing exactly what we are supposed to do, we become unstoppable.
If you’re at a place in life or business where you want more, or if you’re at a place where you feel plateaued, it might be time to get more clarity on your Big Why. Please send me a message and we can talk about how to get that more clear for you!
